Without going into too much technical detail, the Piezo differs from a traditional magnetic pickup in that the Piezo element vibrates with the string, sending an electrical signal of that vibration to a preamp within the guitar for processing, rather than capturing an electromagnetic representation of that vibration which can then be sent directly to an amplifier, or to an onboard preamp if further shaping of the signal is desired. The Piezo eliminates the need for steel strings, which would otherwise interact with the magnetic pickup, and also produces more satisfactory results for players with a lighter fingerstyle technique. Lest you think this is just another passing fancy, Parker has produced a nylon string version of their famous "Fly" model and another up-and-comer, Sadowski Guitars, is producing a Telecaster style model employing the same technology.
An acoustic guitar is so named because the hollow design of its body provides a natural means by which the acoustics can be optimized, so that the sound of the guitar is naturally amplified, and therefore needs no exterior or additional means of amplifying the sound. Electric guitars are quite different, and without an external, electrical amplifier, strumming or picking the strings will make almost no sound at all, and certainly nothing much more impressive than pinging a rubber band! It is for this reason that electric guitars do use external amplification, but there is a common misconception or misunderstanding as to what exactly the external amplification does.
Here are some suggested combinations of strings pickups amplifiers speakers that I think work well: Roundwound Strings Humbucker Pickups Tube Amp. (6l6 tubes) 15" JBL Speaker (clean sound). Rollerwound Strings Single Coil Pickups Tube Amp. (6l6 tubes) 10" Jensen Speakers (blues tone). Roundwound Strings Humbucker Pickups Tube Amp (el34 tubes) 12" Celestion Speakers (distorted rock and roll sound). Flatwound Strings Humbucker Pickups Solid State Amp. Eminence Woofer (jazz tone).
The Solution We Have Been Waiting For. This is the installed switch. It is selecting the neck pickup, a Classic Strat Stack Plus. This is the installed switch. When building a guitar using Warmoth Guitar Parts this past year, I set out to build the ultimate HSS guitar. I wanted to solve the the hum and balance problems between the pickups. I also know that I never use the middle pickup alone, even on my Strat. I love it in conjunction with the neck or bridge pickup though, so it was important for me to have.
